Cinnamon is one of those spices that you either love or hate.  I personally like it.  Cinnamon rolls, cinnamon apple pie, cinnamon butter, as a dry rub on meats, or in hot drinks or smoothies.  No matter how you like it, it is a spice that has great variety.  It not only tastes good but it has lots of medicinal value as well.

Lets talk about the types of cinnamon.  There is Ceylon cinnamon and Cassia cinnamon.  The type of cinnamon most common in grocery stores is Cassia cinnamon, known for its strong, spicy flavor and reddish-brown color, which is used in many baking recipes and everyday cooking.  While Cassia cinnamon is affordable and widely available, its active ingredient, called coumarin, can be toxic in large doses.

The ‘true cinnamon” and the most medicinal cinnamon is Ceylon.  It has a more delicate, floral, and citrusy flavor and is often found in specialty stores.  Both have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-microbial properties.

Cassia cinnamon can help more with lowering blood sugar levels, although Ceylon isn’t far behind in that regard.  Ceylon can also be useful for managing type 2 diabetes, relieve gas and bloating, promote heart health, and support collagen synthesis which improves skin elasticity.

If you aren’t incorporating cinnamon into your daily routine, you should, especially if you are suffering from poor blood sugar levels.  Just be careful if you are taking pharmaceutical medications.  Cinnamon, or any other herbs, can interact with pharmaceutical medications.
