You hear a little about black cohosh but did you know there is a blue cohosh?  Lets talk about it.

Blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) is a plant used in traditional medicine for various health conditions, particularly women’s health issues.  It is not an herb that should be consumed during pregnancy, during nursing, if you have heart conditions, if you have high blood pressure or high blood sugar, or have hormone-sensitive conditions because it acts like estrogen.

Blue cohosh is a perennial that spreads and becomes bushy when mature.  It can get 1-3 ft. tall with purple like leaves in the spring, purple brown to yellow green flowers, and bright-blue berries.   Blue cohosh is suitable for growing zones 3-8. It thrives in partial to full shade with moist, humus-rich soil, mimicking its natural woodland habitat.

Historically, it has been used to stimulate uterine contractions to induce labor, start menstruation, or ease menstrual pain and cramps.  It has also been used as an anti-inflammatory for rhematic pain, arthritis, and general inflammation along with being used as a diuretic which increases urine output, diaphoretic which promotes sweating, and to treat sore throats, colic, and the hiccups.

As you can see, this is an herb that can be beneficial, not just for females.  I encourage you to take a deep dive into this herb and others and get them on your shelf so you have medicine available when you need it.
