There are two methods of making an oil.  The cold method is the preferred method, letting the herbs steep in a carrier oil in a glass jar for four to six weeks (turning once a day).  Or you can do the hot method.  Carrier oils are plant-based oils such as grapeseed oil, olive oil, and jojoba oil. The following is instructions on the hot method.  Make sure the temperature stays no more than 110 degrees Fahrenheit.  Heating over 110 degrees can destroy both the herbs and oil.  For oils, you must use dried herbs. 

  1. Put the herbs in the top part of a double boiler.  
  2. Cover the herbs with an inch or two of high-quality cold pressed olive oil or any plant-based oil with a high heat point.  Do not use extra virgin olive oil as this should never be heated. 
  3. Slowly bring the oil to a very low simmer, with just a few bubbles rising.  Make sure you cover the double boiler with a lid to keep all the medicinal benefits from evaporating.  Do not let oil go over 110 degrees.  Simmer gently for thirty to sixty minutes.  When the oil looks and smells ‘herby’, the herbal properties have been transferred to the oil.  The lower the heat and the longer the infusion, the better the oil. 
  4. Strain out the herbs.  Let the oil cool.  Bottle and label the oil.  
  5. Store in a cool, dry, dark location.
