Mugwort is a pretty common perennial. In the past, it has been known as a magical plant, a reliable remedy for female complaints, and an effective nerve tonic.
The scientific name is Artemisia vulgaris and it is has reddish or pale yellow woolly flowers on short reddish or purplish stems with shiny green, pointed leaves. The roots are long, tough and brown with inner white flesh. The plant grows up to 3 ½ feet tall.
The young shoots, flower buds, flowers, stems and leaves are used medicinally. It is rich in vitamin C and unsaturated fatty acids.
Mugwort is sometimes referred to as the ‘women’s herb’ because it is used to promote menstruation and induce childbirth. Another common use for the plant is to treat stomach disorders, including stimulating the appetite, easing nausea, stimulating menstruation, or curing worms.
I’ve even been told it can illicit some good dreams. I’m anxious to try this on myself in the spring. I grow this herb, however the way I have used it up until now has been for natural goat deworming.
As you can see, this is another very important herb to grow. It is good for so many things. I encourage you to grow some of these amazing medicinal herbs!
