Description
American Ranch Elderberry
In the order, you will receive 3 clippings.
Instructions:
When you receive your clippings, you can either place them in the refrigerator or in a shallow container of water. They will arrive with the lower portion wrapped in wet brown paper and the lower part inside a ziplock back.
For the refrigerator, place your elder clippings with the brown paper and sandwich bag into the refrigerator. Leave in the refrigerator until it is warm outside, then you can plant. The night time temperatures needs to not go below 65 degrees. For growing zone 7, this is around May 15th. It does very from one growing zone to the next. Check once a week to make sure the brown wrap is damp. If dry, add just a little water to the sandwich bag.
If you prefer to not put them in the refrigerator, you can place the very tips (angled cuts) into water. Too much water can cause them to rot. Planting should only happen when the night time temperatures do not go below 65 degrees. Elderberry likes warmth.
Do not plant in pots. On each clipping there is at least 2 nodes. You will be able to see green sprouts coming from most of the nodes. The node at the bottom (where the angled cut is) is what needs to be placed in the ground. The bottom node will produce roots, the top node(s) will produce the stems, leaves, umbel flowers, & berries. It needs a lot of water at the beginning. Water every day for the first 3-4 weeks. Then water it once a week for 3-4 weeks. After that, it should be good & you can only rely on rainfall to water it (unless there is a long drought).
You will not see growth this year or next year. It takes 2 years for this to grow to maturity. At that time, it will grow very quickly. It can get up to 7-8 feet tall, although it is considered a bush. It normally begins producing the umbel flowers in July & the purple elderberries in August. It is worth noting that elderberries should always be cooked before consuming & also, do not eat the green berries.
