Rose hips are the fleshy, seed-containing fruit of the wild rose plant.  They appear as bright orange or red berries after the rose petals have fallen off.  They can be harvested in the fall after the first frost.  Choose rose hips that are firm, bright red or orange, and free from signs of rot.

For culinary purposes, they are used to make teas, jams, and syrups.  The oil from rose hips is used in lotions or creams for its ability to prevent wrinkles.

Medicinally they can reduce pain and swelling from arthritis, menstrual cramps, and other conditions by combating inflammation.  They also boost the immune system, aid digestion, protect the liver, have anti-oxidant activity, treat urinary tract infections, treat kidney problems, treat menstrual irregularities, and treat colds.

Due to their high Vitamin C content, rose hips can interfere with blood-thinning medications and should be used with caution if you are taking other medications.
