Understanding the sodium to potassium ratio is non-negotiable. It’s one of the most important ratios in Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis and it tells you far more than most people realize.
Every single cell in the body relies on the sodium-potassium pump.
This pump regulates what gets in and out of the cell — nutrients, waste, signaling molecules, hydration. It’s the foundation of how our cells communicate, generate energy, and function at a basic level.
If this ratio is off, nothing works optimally.
What’s ideal?
We generally aim for a sodium to potassium ratio between 2.1 and 3.1 on an HTMA test. 2.4 is considered a strong midpoint.
But outside that range?
Things start to get interesting.
If it’s too high (above 3.1):
This often signals acute stress, pain, inflammation, or a hyper-reactive system. You might also be looking at:
- Water retention or edema
- High blood pressure
- Estrogen dominance
- Mood swings, irritability, or even aggression
- Liver or kidney stress (especially if the ratio is >12)
High sodium can be driven by a number of things from heavy metals (like copper, mercury, cadmium, aluminum) to cortisone medications or just unprocessed emotional stress.
When this ratio is high, the body’s in a “push” state. It’s trying to move something, often forcefully.
If it’s too low (below 2.1):
This is what we call an inverted ratio and it’s often much more serious.
This pattern is linked to:
- Chronic fatigue
- Poor immunity
- Ongoing infections
- Low stomach acid and digestive issues
- Sugar cravings
- Emotional blunting, frustration, or even repressed anger
If the ratio drops below 1.0, it often reflects chronic depletion and sometimes even emotional trauma not just from the body, but the psyche. Think: long-term stress that’s never been fully processed.
Low Na:K often means the body is losing potassium rapidly, and that needs to be corrected…fast. And while supplementation is helpful, so is asking why potassium is being lost in the first place. Metals? Gut dysfunction? Emotional repression? Adrenal exhaustion?
What do you do about it?
If it’s high → I look for inflammation. Where is it coming from? Is there any trauma, unprocessed stress, gut infections, liver function, and contaminated water sources. Potassium support may be needed.
If it’s low → Start by replenishing potassium and supporting digestion. Consider emotional processing work. If I suspect metal involvement, additional testing may be needed. This pattern often shows up in people who’ve been running on empty for too long.
This ratio isn’t just a number.
It tells the story of how well a body can regulate energy, emotions, immunity, and adaptation.
